The Healing Power of
Plants and Beauty in Truth |
The following event is being run by The Arts Society
Haslemere, on Thursday 28th October 2021 |
|
Two Lectures at The Museum Haslemere at 10.30 am
(doors open 10.00 am)
Cost £25.00 with complimentary refreshments. |
Fame and success finally reached Monet in his
last years at Giverny, his home in Normandy
where he produced the famous “series” paintings:
penetrating examinations of the changing
sequences of light across foliage, water and
gothic masonry, images of such delicacy and
beauty that it is easy to forget that they are
also the substance of one of the greatest
revolutions in the visual arts. |
|
THE HEALING POWER OF PLANTS
Why plant derived treatments are not an
alternative, instead they are the real thing.
Mankind has exploited the medicinal properties
of plants for thousands of years, yet the role
of plants in modern medicine is still considered
to be peripheral by many people. This talk
attempts to put the record straight and to show
that plant products are used every day by all of
us to relieve pain and suffering, to heal wounds
and cure diseases. This is a talk with a very
wide appeal and relevance. |
|
BEAUTY IN TRUTH
The past, present, and future of botanical art
and illustration Many people now carry a phone
with a camera capable of taking very
high-quality pictures, and yet the painting of
botanical specimens persists with new
Florilegium Societies still being formed. Why is
a drawing and painting still considered to be
superior to a digital image? This talk looks at
the history of botanical illustration from
drawings made on rocks 20,000 years ago to the
present day, taking in the lives of both the
artists and the plants immortalised in the
artwork. |

Q4 2021 Study
Morning with Timothy Walker |
The Lion of the Sea -
500 years of Art in Venice - With Douglas Skeggs |
The following event is being run by The Arts Society
Farnham on 3rd November 2021 |
|
|
For three hundred years Venice was the most
powerful citystate in the Mediterranean, and
much of its wealth was put towards ornamenting
itself with works of art. These golden years of
Venice’s history were to produce the works of
Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese. Then, when the
Republic collapsed and the city fell into decay,
it became a treasure house for the artistic
imagination. Painters from all over Europe came
to Venice to paint its quiet back waters, and
the city was reborn as a romantic vision.
This Study morning looks into the artists who
have lived and worked in Venice, from Titian,
Tintoretto to Turner and Monet their styles,
their techniques and how each added his own
unique contribution to the artistic legend of
the city.
Study Morning: 3rd November 2021
Time: 10.30am to 1.00pm
Location: Barley Room, Maltings Farnham, Bridge
Square, Farnham Surrey GU9 7QR

Monet and The Impressionists, the Joy and the Torment |

Monet was the driving force of Impressionism.
Ambitious, determined and stubborn, he was
gifted with an astonishing technical ability and
a precision of observation that few artists have
rivalled. Brought up on the Seine estuary he
came into contact with Boudin and Jongkind who
inspired him to ignore the conventions of the
past and work directly from nature, recording
only what his eyes could see.
In Paris he met Renoir, Sisley, Pissarro and
Bazille, then later Manet who invited them to
join his artist friends at the Cafe Guerbois.
After a disastrous exhibition the group became
known as the Impressionists, a chance name that
has remained with them ever since. |
